The clocks went back an hour during the early hours of the morning, ushering in even darker winter evenings. But even with less daylight, a nation famous for its overcast skies and damp weather is increasingly tapping into an unlikely renewable energy source: solar power.
Irish households are warming to solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in their droves. The number of solar PV installations part-funded by grants from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) more than tripled in the first half of this year, driven by the removal in May of Vat on the supply and installation of domestic PV panels, the availability of grants and the desire of homeowners to tackle high energy bills and do their bit for the climate.
