NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Geoff Edwards has been waiting months to install solar panels on his home.
“It’s been down since July 3rd,” Edward said.
Then, last week he hears the company that installed his panel has closed. Investigative Reporter Lindsay Bramson asked, “Did you find out from the Facebook group?
“I found out from the Facebook group by posting the letters they sent out to employees, saying we are closing our doors immediately,” Edwards said.
WSMV4 Investigators obtained a copy of the letter in which the employees were told they were out of a job immediately.
Pink Energy blames the sudden shutdown on utility issues and declining sales. But what about its customers?
“What are we going to do now? I pay money for the paper weight on my roof,” Edwards said.
When WSMV 4 Investigates called Pink Energy, their number was disconnected so we went to their office in Murfreesboro only to find the door locked and no one inside.
“How could they close without creating a support structure for their customers,” Edwards said.
For many customers, Generac is the supplier of materials for the panels. And they say, in most cases, they find the panels are not properly installed.
Generac tells WSMV4 Investigates that it plans to help people and that Pink Energy customers should contact them directly.
We also found that consumers can contact the Tennessee Solar Energy Industries Association for assistance.
The association’s director says that if homeowners have solar equipment that isn’t working, they can contact them to find a solar technician who will come out to fix it.
Edwards says when he got these solar panels two years ago, he was happy to save money. But instead, it has been costing him more money in his pocket, and all he wants is to get what he paid for.
“I want a way to work where I have support so if it has problems along the way I can fix it,” Edwards said.
The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office said it is aware of Pink Energy’s sudden shutdown and is evaluating next steps.
If you are one of the many affected customers, you can contact Generac directly at solarsupport@generac.com or 1-800-396-1281.
If homeowners have solar systems that are not working, TenneSEIA (Tennessee Solar Energy Industries Association) encourages those customers to reach out to a TenneSEIA solar system that works in their area.
All members of their organization agree on a Code of Conduct designed to help prevent these types of situations from occurring. A list of TenneSEIA members can be found here.
TVA says it also has a value-added network called Green Connect that TenneSEIA supports. The program “connects” residential customers with installers who are members of TVA’s high quality and long-term Quality Contractor Network (QCN). QCN members are licensed and insured and agree to install systems to Green Connect Program standards.
