The City of New Bedford has been honored by a New England Energy Policy Association for City Leadership in Solar Energy.
The Association of Solar Energy Companies of New England (SEBANE) recently presented the City with the association’s Local Solar Leadership Award, highlighting the City’s prominence in the development of solar energy.
With a portfolio of 16.25 MW in solar installations, the City of New Bedford, per capita, ranks among the top solar municipalities in the continental United States. For their efforts, the City’s leadership has been profiled in The Wall Street Journal and other prominent publications. Today, ten large solar installations totaling more than $53 million in privately funded construction are saving city taxpayers $1 million a year by reducing utility bills for city departments. Over a 20-year period, the solar projects are expected to save the city government $22 million.
“Offshore wind power may be grabbing headlines, but solar power has also been a key part of our renewable energy portfolio and has saved city taxpayers millions of dollars,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “We are honored that SEBANE has recognized our efforts on this front over the past few years.”
