Australian researchers have made a breakthrough in renewable energy technology, proving that solar energy can be generated at night.

The research, published in ACS Photonics and unveiled to the public on Tuesday, was conducted by a team of researchers from the Australian University of New South Wales (UNSW). The findings were the first step in creating more efficient devices that could one day capture energy on a much larger scale.
The Earth’s infrared radiant heat can be used to generate electricity even after the sun has set, and this will allow them to develop a semiconductor device called a thermal radiation diode, which can generate power from the emission of infrared light.
“When using thermal cameras, you can see how much radiation there is at night, but only in the infrared instead of the visible wavelengths,” said Associate Professor Ned Ekins-Daukes.
The thermosetting diode, composed of materials found in night-vision goggles, can capture emissions of infrared thermal radiation and convert it into electricity. The process ultimately still utilizes solar energy, which hits the earth during the day, with the same energy radiation that backs into the cold outer space in the form of infrared light at night.
“Just as a solar cell can generate electricity by absorbing sunlight emitted from the very hot sun, the thermosetting diode generates electricity by emitting infrared light into a colder environment. In both cases, the temperature difference is what allows us to generate electricity.”
The research made an unambiguous demonstration of electric power from a thermal radiation diode, but the amount of current generated at this stage is very small, around 100,000 times less than that supplied by a solar panel.
“By leveraging our knowledge of how to design and optimize solar cells and borrow materials from the existing mid-infrared photodetector community, we hope for rapid progress toward delivering the dream of solar energy at night,” said Michael Nielsen, co-author of the paper.
A battery cooling system was installed and Solar Impulse 2 resumed ground voyage in April 2016, when it flew on to California. It continued across the United States until it reached New York City in June 2016. Later that month, the plane crossed the Atlantic to the city of Seville.
