Row upon row of solar panels span 23 quarter sections of Vulcan County fields. The massive project is the Travers Solar Project, the largest of its kind in Canada covering 3,330 acres.
“About 1.3 million solar panels will be installed on the entire site,” said Greg Sheremeta, project director for PCL Construction Management, the company in charge of building the site.
He added that once the designers had a plan, the civil, structural and electrical engineers made it.
“There are probably about 20 different engineering companies that were part of the project and are currently working on it, and I estimate that there would be more than hundreds of engineers who have participated in the design and are currently working with us on construction.”

The project was developed through a partnership with Greengate Power Corporation and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Each phase of the project is an important undertaking that requires a significant amount of workers.
“We currently have around 750 field workers on-site and around 40 people on-site working from a management point of view,” said Sheremeta.
According to the Canada Energy Regulator, the Prairies are leading the country in the development of renewable energy.
Chief economist Jean-Denis Charlebois predicts significant growth in solar capacity in what is the sunniest part of Canada.
“We see this trend will continue for decades to come, which is why we see renewables could reach 50% of the electricity generation mix by 2050, particularly in Alberta,” Charlebois said.
For a province known for fossil fuels, southern Alberta is seeing a change as renewables are becoming a more important player in power generation.
“It’s not a question of hydrocarbons or renewables versus each other,” Charlebois said.
“It’s really about all forms of energy and how they can complement each other in the context where Canada is trying to move to a low-carbon economy.”
