KINGSTON, R.I. – June 20, 2022 – It is common for students at the University of Rhode Island to catch some quad lights by the end of the school year.
Students in the URI solar system course, however, have not been to the College of Engineering recently to work on their tans. They used to catch light for educational reasons.
Each of the 25 students who can make 8 oyster bottles of water explode or melt in two hours, using a heat and power engine, will automatically receive an “A” for their summer semester readings.
“The first time I taught this course, it was a heavy-duty homework assignment,” said Gretchen Macht, assistant professor of system engineering at URI. “I changed it into a big order, a big reward.”
The plastic bottles were produced by Macht. The design and construction of solar cookware is left to the creativity and ingenuity of students.
The designs come from something as small as a shoe box lined with aluminum foil for decoration like a standard solar panel system with multiple mirrors.
“Some inventions have been marvelous, using recycled materials such as satellite dishes or objects around the home and creatures such as sticks, to capture the full range of visuals with mirrors and lenses, “said Macht, who is also the director of URI’s Sustainable Innovative Solutions laboratory. and URI Selection Services & amp; Electoral System Program.
The first to accomplish this task was Adam Murphy, an engineering major. In less than an hour, the water temperature in the bottle reached 369 degrees.
“My strategy is to block the light as much as possible,” Murphy said. “As some were trying to raise the temperature, I tried to make the water boil in a small area. I tried using a charcoal slurry to take most of the light from the top of the bottle to pick up and convert the light into heat. “
Three other students were able to get the bottle to explode or melt: Zachary deWardener, Cam Amaral and Todd Poulos.
Murphy, who hails from South Kingstown, earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering in May.
“This course is a great combination of math, engineering, and real-world problem solving,” Murphy said. “Dr. Macht makes the class feel comfortable, as he dives into every aspect of solar energy. “
The course attracts students from many engineering programs at URI and other students from non-engineering programs.
“The class has been very interesting and inspiring in that Dr. Macht has given a global and local perspective on solar and other renewable energy,” he said. Kaitlin Neville, a graduate student from Garden City, NY who is studying engineering. “Speakers from the solar industry spoke to the class and there are handicrafts that allow students to predict what work in the solar industry could entail, including solar competition as a final project.”
Helping Macht continue to measure water quality is research assistant Kassia Almeida and assistant director Amber Fearn.
“I think the course and the final went well,” Macht said. “I will consider adding a few parameters next year, such as limiting the size of the mirror and / or lenses that can be used.”
