FELICITY, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 28: In an aerial view, the All-American Canal conveys water through the Imperial Sand Dunes of California's Colorado Desert, a few miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, on September 28, 2022 near Felicity, California. The 80-mile long canal carries water from the Colorado River to supply nine Southern California cities and 500,000 acres of farmland in the Imperial Valley where a few hundred farms draw more water from the Colorado River than the states of Arizona and Nevada combined. As drought shrinks the Colorado River to historic low levels and with states that rely on it facing major water shortages, pressure is building on the growers to give up some of the water rights they had inherited long ago. The Imperial Sand Dunes are the remnants of the beach sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla, the basin of which is where the dying Salton Sea is located. The federal government has proposed an unprecedented plan to cut back on water supplies for Arizona, Nevada and California, where millions of people rely on its water and power, as climate change-driven drought continues to lower water levels at the biggest reservoirs in the nation, lakes Mead and Powell, to historic low capacities. New solar panel project over California canal could expand thousands of miles if successful

The plan, dubbed Project Nexus, is expected to break ground in 2023 and become operational in 2024, bringing 8,500 feet of solar panels to Turlock’s canals. Next year starts an ambitious solar panel project that, if successful, could see thousands of miles of panels installed above California’s irrigation canals. The plan, The plan, dubbed Project […]

Can solar energy work in space? Here are the pros and cons.

Solar radiation from space used to be considered science fiction. But in recent years, space agencies around the world have launched studies into the feasibility of building real power plants in orbit. Such projects would be difficult to pull off, stakeholders agree, but as global attempts to curb climate change continue to fail, such moonshot […]

NASA performs spacewalk to install solar array on space station

NASA astronauts on Thursday morning successfully attached a solar array on the International Space Station after a piece of space junk was determined to be flying dangerously close to the orbiting laboratory. Astronauts Josh Cassada and Frank Rubio began the spacewalk at 8:19 a.m. EST to install an International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array, or […]

As energy crisis bites, Spaniards snap up solar panels

As energy crisis bites, Spaniards snap up solar panels

Demand for solar panels has shot up to unprecedented levels in Spain as Europe’s energy crisis shows no sign of letting up, in a welcome boost for a sector with huge potential. “Here we have sun almost all year round,” said Paloma Utrera showing off the black panels installed on her roof in Pozuelo de […]

Decoding the secret language of photosynthesis

Decoding the secret language of photosynthesis

For decades, scientists have been stumped by the signals plants send themselves to initiate photosynthesis, the process of turning sunlight into sugars. UC Riverside researchers have now decoded those previously opaque signals. For half a century botanists have known that the command center of a plant cell, the nucleus, sends instructions to […]
